A gynaecologist is a doctor whose work is the study and treatment of illnesses that affect women, especially around the womb and a woman’s ability to have a baby. They also do checks to see that those parts are well. The word names the person, not the field. In many hospitals this doctor’s work sits next to obstetrics, which is the care of pregnancy and birth; in Taiwan, one clinic often does both, and families just say they are going to 婦產科. British spelling is gynaecologist; American spelling is gynecologist.
