1. 1n/ˌɡʊdʒəˈrɑːti/Gujarati (language)古吉拉特語

The language of Gujarat, a state in the west of India, also spoken by many Gujarati families who now live in other countries.

    文法不可數名詞:通常不加 a/an,也不加 -s 來表示複數。

    Gujarati 當語言用的時候,跟 English、Japanese 一樣。前面不加 a,也沒有複數,開頭一定大寫。常見的句型是 speak Gujarati、in Gujarati、learn Gujarati。同一個字也可以指「古吉拉特人」,還可以當形容詞用。分辨方法看句子就好:speak Gujarati 是語言,a Gujarati 是人,Gujarati food 是形容詞。這個語言來自印度西部的古吉拉特邦(Gujarat)。

    示範例句 · Example

Aisha speaks Gujarati at home and English at school.

    中文翻譯艾莎在家說古吉拉特語,在學校說英語。

As the name of a language, Gujarati behaves like English or Japanese in a sentence: no a, no plural, and always a capital G. You speak Gujarati, you read something in Gujarati, you learn Gujarati. The same word also names a person from Gujarat and describes anything connected with the place, so the sentence around it tells you which one you are meeting: speak Gujarati is the language, a Gujarati is a person, Gujarati food is the describing word.

  2. 2n/ˌɡʊdʒəˈrɑːti/Gujarati (person)古吉拉特人

Someone who comes from Gujarat in the west of India, or whose family originally came from there. Many Gujaratis live outside India, and a large number of families in Britain have Gujarati roots.

    文法可數名詞:前面可以加 a/an,要表示複數時常常加 -s。

    這是可數的用法:a Gujarati、two Gujaratis。它講的只是「人或家族來自哪裡」,跟信仰、職業都無關。日常寫作裡,更常看到的其實是形容詞的說法:a Gujarati family、Gujarati parents。兩種講法指的是同一件事,形容詞的語氣輕一點。英國有不少古吉拉特裔的家庭,所以這個字在英文文章裡並不罕見。

This is the countable use: a Gujarati, two Gujaratis. It says where a person or their family is from — nothing about what they believe or what work they do. In everyday writing you will often meet the describing word instead, as in a Gujarati family or Gujarati parents, and it says the same thing about the person while sounding a little lighter.
