1. 1n/bɛŋˈɡɔːli/Bengali language孟加拉語

The language used in Bangladesh and in the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam and Tripura.

    文法不可數名詞:通常不加 a/an,也不加 -s 來表示複數。

    Bengali 當語言時是不可數的。前面不加 a,也不會變複數。語言名稱在英文裡一定大寫,句子中間也一樣。常見說法是 speak Bengali、in Bengali。也可以說 learn Bengali、a Bengali speaker。同一個拼法也能指「孟加拉人」。那時候就變成可數,會出現 a Bengali、two Bengalis。所以看前後有沒有 a、有沒有複數,就知道現在講的是語言還是人。

    示範例句 · Example

Nadia is teaching her classmates how to say thank you in Bengali.

    中文翻譯娜迪亞正在教她的同學怎麼用孟加拉語說謝謝。

As a language name, Bengali is uncountable: no a, no plural. It takes a capital letter, like every language name in English. The usual patterns are speak Bengali, in Bengali, learn Bengali, and a Bengali speaker. The same spelling also names a person from Bengal, and there the grammar changes, because you can then say a Bengali and two Bengalis. So the small grammar signs around the word are what tell you which use you are reading.

  2. 2n/bɛŋˈɡɔːli/person from Bengal孟加拉人

A person from Bengal, the area now shared by Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, or a person whose family comes from there.

    文法可數名詞:前面可以加 a/an,要表示複數時常常加 -s。

    這個用法指「孟加拉(地區)的人」。它是可數的。可以說 a Bengali、two Bengalis。它講的是一個地區,不是一個國家。因為 Bengal 這個地區現在分屬孟加拉國和印度的西孟加拉邦。所以 Bengali 跟 Bangladeshi 不完全一樣。西孟加拉的人可能說自己是 Bengali,但不是 Bangladeshi。族群名稱一樣要大寫。

Here the word is countable: a Bengali, two Bengalis. It points at where a person or a person's family comes from, and that place is a region rather than one country, because Bengal is now split between two states. So Bengali and Bangladeshi are not the same label: someone from West Bengal in India may call themselves Bengali but not Bangladeshi. The capital letter stays, as it does with all names of peoples.
