Grift is American slang from the criminal world about a hundred years ago. In the sense you need here, it points at dishonest taking — especially of money — and at the kind of person who lives that way. Though actually, everyday talk is messy: many people use grift for the trick itself (a long lie, a fake kindness, a scheme that ends with your wallet empty), some use it for the money taken, and some aim it at the person doing it. In careful talk the person is usually a grifter, and grift is the act or the living. You will hear it in US crime stories, and in the last ten or fifteen years online, aimed at people who sell fake hope — in , on the internet — for cash. It is informal. It is not a British classroom word. It is never a compliment. As a verb, to grift is to get something that way. The word was bent from graft, the older word for dirty profit and bribes; the sound may have been pulled toward words like drift.

    騙局;靠花招騙錢(美式俚語。講「那個人」時更常說 grifter)

組成American criminal slang: noun 1906, verb 1915. An alteration of graft (dirty profit, bribes), perhaps influenced by similar-sounding words such as drift. Further back it probably comes from Middle Dutch graft (a ditch, a digging; modern Dutch gracht), related to Dutch graven and to English grave in the old sense “to dig.”
