A grifter is someone who gets things — especially money — by tricks, not by honest work. The word is American, informal, and a little street-flavoured. It began in circus talk around 1906, in the same rough world as a shill (the who pretends to be an customer). From there it : a grifter might sell a fake cure, run a card trick, or talk an older person out of their savings. In recent years, especially online, people throw it at public figures they think are cashing in on lies. That use can be angry and political; it is not a calm courtroom label. Though actually, a thief who just snatches a bag is not quite a grifter. A grifter works by charm, story, and trust. It is plus -er, and it sits next to the older word grafter, which is almost the same idea from a slightly different street.
組成From grift + -er; or probably an alteration of grafter (a corrupt person). Originally circus slang; first attested in 1906, and much more common online since the late 2010s.
