Greenland is a huge island in the North Atlantic, near northeast Canada. Almost all of it is covered by ice. The capital is Nuuk. Only tens of thousands of people live there. It belongs to Denmark, but it has its own government and runs most of its own daily life. The name looks like green + land, and that is how it is built: it is an English calque of Old Norse Grǿnland, from grǿnn (“green”) + land (“land”). Though actually the place is not green in the way a student pictures a green country. People often tell the old story that it was named to sound inviting, so would come; whether that was clever advertising or a fair name for the milder coastal strips, the ice is what you meet. Students also mix it up with Iceland, which sits nearby on the map and has the more “icy” name. Greenland is the icy giant; Iceland is the smaller, greener (in parts) island with its own country.
