Iceland is a country on a large island in the North Atlantic Ocean, just south of the Arctic Circle. The capital is . Only a few hundred thousand people live there (about 315,000 in 2014), so it is a very small country in population, even though the island itself is not tiny. It is famous for fire and ice at the same time: volcanoes, hot springs you can bathe in, and geysers — holes in the ground that suddenly shoot hot water into the air. The people speak Icelandic. In English, Iceland almost always means this country, not “a land of ice” in a general way. The name is simply ice + land, copied from Old Norse Ísland. An older Norse name for the place was Snæland, “snow land”.
組成ice + land. English took the name from Middle English Iseland, a copy of Old Norse Ísland, which already meant ice + land. It replaced an older Norse name, Snæland (“snow land”).
