A greenhouse is a building, usually of glass or clear plastic, used for growing plants that need warmth, light, and protection the open air will not give them. use it for tomatoes, young plants, and anything that would die in a cold winter. The house is not painted green. Green here is the plants — the greens — grown inside. The word is ordinary and about a real building you can walk into. People stretch it in talk about the greenhouse effect: the way some gases in the air trap heat, as glass traps heat. That is a comparison with this building, not a second kind of house. This word, in the sense you are learning, is the glass building itself. You will also meet greenhouse as a place of ideas (a greenhouse for new companies), but that is a later, looser use of the same picture.
