Picture a field, and then the same field a few years later. The second one is thicker, taller and far heavier at harvest, because the seed, the water and the fertiliser all changed. That jump is the first meaning, and it has a name and a date: a change in farming big enough that people reached for the word revolution. The second meaning keeps the word revolution and swaps the green. Instead of green as growing crops, it is green as looking after the planet — the same sense of a large, fast change of direction, this time in how people use energy, land and water.
Coined in 1968 by William Steen Gaud, then former head of the US foreign aid programme (USAID), and modelled on the existing names Red Revolution and White Revolution.
