A gravedigger is a person whose job is to dig the hole in the ground where a coffin will go, and often to fill it again after the funeral. The work is old, physical, and usually done for a cemetery or a funeral service. In stories a gravedigger may talk while he works. This grave is the burial place, not the adjective grave meaning “serious.”
