If something is gratis, you do not pay for it. It can follow a verb like an adverb (They repaired it gratis) or sit before a noun (gratis tickets), though many people just say free in both places. English borrowed the word from Latin, so it feels a little formal, old-fashioned, or “clever.” Shops more often say free, , or on the house. It is about money, not about feeling thankful.
