    A gratin is a baked dish with a brown, often cheesy top. You put potato, other vegetables, fish, or seafood in a shallow dish, cover it with cheese or a cheese sauce, and cook it in the oven until the top is golden and a little crisp. On menus you will also see potato gratin or au gratin. It is a cooking word, more at home in a recipe or a restaurant than in the street. It is not the metal grate in a fireplace, and it is not a person named Gratin.
