A grater is a kitchen tool. You rub food — cheese, carrot, ginger, lemon skin — against a metal face full of little sharp holes, and the food comes off in thin shreds or tiny bits. A box grater often has a different size of hole on each side. It is a very ordinary tool; most family kitchens have one, and almost everyone cuts a knuckle on it once. Though actually, grater and greater sound the same in most kinds of English. One is this kitchen tool; the other means “bigger”. Only the spelling, and what you are talking about, tells them apart.
