golly
One way to hold this word: a sentence that was about to start with God, and swerved at the last moment. What is left is the shape of a strong reaction with the force taken out of it - the speaker is surprised, the mouth opens, and something soft and harmless comes out instead.
From the word’s history
Wiktionary records golly as a euphemism for God dating from the 18th century, possibly a compaction of God's body, and tags it as a minced oath. That is exactly the swerve in the picture above.

golly
This one is not a picture the mind makes up; it is a real object. Think of a black rag doll from a Victorian children's book, later sold as a toy and printed on jars and badges for decades. The face is a caricature, so the doll carries its history with it, and so does the name.

From the word’s history
Wiktionary gives the etymology for this entry as simply: from golliwog. The word is the character's name cut short.
