The scientific study of old age — how the body, the mind, and daily life change as people grow old, and how societies care for that. It is a university and research word, not everyday chat. Doctors who treat older patients are doing ; gerontology is wider than medicine, though the two sit next to each other and people mix them up. You hear it in news about countries, pension plans, and ‘how to grow old well.’ Though actually, some speakers stretch it to mean ‘anything about old people,’ which is looser than the -ology really allows: this is a field of study, not a polite for old age itself.
組成geronto- (from Ancient Greek gérontos, ‘old man / old age’) + -logy (from Greek -logíā via Latin and French, ‘the study of’).
