A gerontologist is a scientist who studies old age and — what it does to the body, and often to the mind and to society. That field is gerontology. A gerontologist may work at a university, write papers, and never a pill. The matching doctor is a : that person treats old people. The two words sit next to each other in the dictionary and in students’ heads, but the jobs split: one studies, one treats. It is a formal, academic title.
