Geriatrics is the branch of medicine that treats and cares for old people — illness, medicines, hospitals, and staying able to live day to day. It is the doctor’s side of , not the whole science of . The word was coined in English in 1909 by Ignatz L. Nascher, on the model of pediatrics (the medicine of children). The Greek pieces are γῆρας (gêras, “old age”) and ἰατρός (iatrós, “physician”). The neater Greek shape would have been gerontiatrics; geriatrics is the word we actually got. Gerontology is the wider scientific study of old age; geriatrics is the medical treatment. Formal, used in hospital names: a geriatrics ward, the department of geriatrics. It names the subject, not the people themselves.
