Gerontological means “to do with gerontology”: the scientific study of old age and what it does to the body (and often to the mind and to society). You will see it in academic writing: gerontological research, a gerontological journal. It is a university word, not a clinic word. Geriatric leans toward medical care of old people; gerontological leans toward studying . You can do gerontological work without being a doctor, and without treating a single patient.
