A gas-fired machine or heating system burns gas as its fuel — usually mains gas or natural gas, the kind that comes through pipes for cooking, hot water and power stations, not the American word for petrol. A gas-fired boiler warms a house; a gas-fired plant makes electricity. Fired here means “given fire; made to burn,” the same pattern as coal-fired or oil-fired, not “lost a job.” The word is ordinary in technical and housing talk: estate agents, engineers, news about energy. If the heat comes from electricity or from burning coal, it is not gas-fired.
