The Garda is the police force of the Republic of Ireland — the state that has Dublin as its capital, not Northern Ireland, which has a different force. The full Irish name is An Garda Síochána, “Guardian of the Peace.” People say the Garda for the whole force; one officer is a Garda, and more than one are Gardaí (you will also see Gardai without the accent). In Ireland, friends often say the Guards in casual talk, though actually the official word is still Garda. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital letter. You meet it in news about Ireland, crime reports, and travel. It is not a garden, and in this meaning it is not a person’s given name.
組成From Irish Garda, “guardian,” in Garda Síochána, “Guardian of the Peace” (and Garda Síochána na hÉireann, “Guardian of the Peace of Ireland”). The Irish name followed the model of the French Third Republic’s civilian gardiens de la paix. Garda itself goes back through Old French guarde / guarder, “to guard,” from Frankish *wardēn, from Proto-Germanic *wardāną.
