    Gainfully is the adverb from gainful. You almost always meet it in one frozen phrase: gainfully employed — working in a paid job. A form, a lawyer, or a news report might ask whether someone is gainfully employed; a would just say 'Do you have a job?' It is not a word for doing something well, , or in a good way. It only talks about pay. Though actually, people stretch it a little in jokes — 'gainfully unemployed' — but that is playing with the official phrase, not a new meaning.
