Gainful describes work or activity that pays you. The phrase you will meet again and again is gainful employment: a proper job with , not a hobby, not volunteering, not sitting at home. Officials and forms like this word; friends almost never say 'I found gainful work' over coffee. It does not mean the work is enjoyable, important, or well paid — only that money comes from it. A short, poorly paid job can still be gainful in this strict sense. The opposite feeling is unpaid, idle, or unofficial.
