A furlong is an old English measure of length, still alive in horse racing. Eight furlongs make one mile, so one furlong is 220 yards, about 201 metres. Race reports say a horse won by a furlong, or that a race is six furlongs (a little over 1,200 metres). You do not use it to measure a road or a room any more; for that we say metres or miles. Though actually the word is older than racing: it began as the typical length of one furrow in a field — furrow + long. That farm meaning has dropped away. Younger people who do not follow racing may never use it; people who bet on horses use it without thinking.
組成From Old English furh (a furrow, a line cut in a field) + lang (long). It was first “as long as a furrow.” Behind those pieces sit older roots: *perḱ- (to dig / open up) and *dlongʰos (long).
