A fungus is a living thing like a mushroom, the mould on old bread, or the yeast that makes bread rise. dictionaries often call it a simple plant with no leaves or flowers. Though actually, scientists now put fungi in their own group — not plants, not animals. A fungus has no green leaves, and it does not make food from sunlight the way a tree does. It feeds on stuff that is already there: wood, food, skin, soil. One is fungus; more than one are fungi. Mushroom and mould are both everyday faces of this group.
