You can picture freely as a path with nothing standing in it. Nobody is holding you back and no rule is drawing a line, so you move, speak or act as much as you like and in the direction you choose. The same empty path then explains a hinge that turns without catching, a thing so that nothing stands between people and getting it, and words that come out without anything holding them in.
