A freebooter is someone who joins a war or a raid in order to steal other people's goods and money — a in wartime, not a regular soldier. Older books use it for pirates and bands that robbed towns. It is built like free + booty + -er: booty is the stolen goods. English copied Dutch vrijbuiter. The same Dutch word later came into English again as filibuster, which now usually means a very long speech that blocks a vote — same old root, very different job today. The word feels historical; you would not call a a freebooter.
