Frankenstein is Mary Shelley’s novel, published in 1818. In the story, a scientist named Victor Frankenstein builds a creature from pieces of dead bodies and brings it to life with electricity. The creature is gentle at first, then lonely and angry, and it turns on the man who made it. The book’s longer title is Frankenstein, or, The Modern . People often get the names wrong: they call the creature Frankenstein, but in the novel Frankenstein is the scientist, and the being is Frankenstein’s monster (it is never given a personal name). Films, especially the 1931 film with Boris Karloff, gave the creature the square head and neck bolts many people picture now — that look is from cinema, not from Shelley’s pages. In later English, Frankenstein also became shorthand for a creator whose invention runs out of control, and for the monster itself, even though teachers still mark that second use as a mix-up. The name itself started as a German place name: Franken (“Franks, Frankish”) + Stein (“stone”).
