Francophone means “using French as a first or main language.” A Francophone country is one where French is official or widely spoken; a Francophone person is someone whose everyday language is French. You will see it in news and school talk about Canada (especially Quebec), parts of Africa, Belgium, Switzerland, and other places in the French-speaking world. It is a fairly formal, educated word — more at home in a report than in a chat about holiday plans. It can be an adjective (Francophone Africa) or a noun (Francophones in Montreal). It does not mean “from France.” Many Francophones have never lived in France; their French may sound quite different from Paris French. People often write it with a capital F, like other words built this way.
組成From French Francophonie, later read as Latin Franco- (“French”) + Greek phōnḗ (“voice, sound”), the same -phone you see in words about speech or sound.
