An anglophone is someone who speaks English, especially as a first language or as the main language of home and public life. It is also an adjective: an anglophone country, the anglophone world, anglophone Africa. The word is at home in places where English sits next to another big language — above all Canada, where anglophone is set against francophone, and in parts of Africa. Though actually, writers do not always mean “first language only.” Sometimes they mean anyone in the English-speaking camp, including people who use English at school and work but speak another language at home. It is a formal, news-and-academic word. In a Taiwan classroom you more often just say English speaker or English-speaking. It has nothing to do with a telephone, even though -phone also lives in that word.
