A foxhound is a hunting dog, bred to smell well and to run a long time after a fox. It is a real type, not a cute name for any dog that looks a bit wild: short coat, hanging ears, strong nose, built to work in a pack. English foxhounds and American foxhounds are the two best-known kinds. People kept them for the old countryside sport of chasing foxes on . The word is plain: fox + hound. Here hound is the older English word for a dog used in the hunt, not a rude word and not the same as “dog” in everyday pet talk.
