A greyhound is a tall, very thin dog with a long nose and long legs. It can run extremely fast, which is why people use greyhounds in dog . The coat can be grey, but it can also be black, white, brown, or mixed — so the name does not mean “the grey dog.” Old English joined a Norse word for a female dog (not the colour grey) with hund, “hound.” Later English speakers thought it looked like grey + hound and spelled it that way. At home they are often quiet; on the track they chase a fake rabbit. American spelling may use grayhound, but the usual form in Taiwan textbooks is greyhound.
