A bloodhound is a large hunting dog with long hanging ears, loose skin, and a nose that can follow a scent for a long way. Police and search teams have used bloodhounds to find missing people or to follow a trail on the ground. The name is old; it does not mean the dog is bloody or fierce by nature. In stories, a person who will not stop following clues may be called a bloodhound too — that is a picture taken from the dog, not another breed. A greyhound is a different dog, built for speed rather than smell.
