Forgetfully is the how-word for . You do something forgetfully when it slips your mind while you are doing it: you walk out and leave the lights on, you put the letter in the wrong bag. It names the manner of the action, not the person as a whole. In real speech it is less common than I forgot or I was being ; you meet it more in writing. It still has that kind, slightly gentle tone — a lapse, not a plan to be rude.
