A fop is a man who cares a great deal about clothes, hair, and looking fine — and the word is a put-down, not a compliment. It says he is showing off, maybe empty underneath, more interested in the mirror than in being useful or sincere. It smells of older centuries ( wigs, period drama, history books); you will not hear it much in a café. Today people say vain, or joke about a pretty boy; fop is the dressy, slightly sneering older label. It is almost always used of men.

組成From Middle English foppe / fobbe, a fop or a fool. Akin to German foppen, ‘to jeer / make fun of’ — a cousin, not a piece you can hear inside the English word.
