A footstep, in the sense you meet first in stories, is the sound one step makes when someone is walking: footsteps in the hall, on the , behind you on a quiet road. Light, heavy, , creeping closer. You also hear footstep for the step itself, and sometimes for the mark a foot leaves, though the clear word for the mark is usually footprint. In follow in someone’s footsteps, it is a picture: do the same kind of life or work, not copy their walking noise. One person walking makes many footsteps; the word is very often plural when you mean the sound.
