On a steam train, the footplate is the metal floor at the front where the driver and the fireman stood to work the engine — looking out, feeding the fire, moving the controls. There was no soft modern cabin; you stood on that plate, often in heat, noise, and coal dust. Railway people still say on the footplate to mean working up there on a steam engine. There is also a verb, to footplate, meaning to ride or work on that floor, but the noun is the one you will meet first.
