Flypaper is a strip of paper covered with something very sticky, sometimes a little sweet-smelling, hung from a ceiling or in a window to catch flies. The fly lands, sticks, and cannot leave. It is an old, cheap way to deal with flies in a kitchen, a shop, or a barn, from the days before sprays were common. You still see it in some places. It is a homely, slightly old-fashioned word. You almost always meet it as a noun: a piece of flypaper hanging there. The picture is not pretty — a strip slowly filling with dead flies — which is why many people now prefer a swatter or a trap you cannot see. Though actually, it only works if flies land on it. It does not chase them, and it does nothing about mosquitoes that do not walk on the paper.
