A firebreak is a narrow strip of land where people have taken away the plants and trees, so a fire on one side cannot easily jump to the other. Forest workers cut them before the dry season, or in a hurry when a wildfire is already moving. Grass, bushes, and dead wood are cleared; sometimes the ground is just bare earth or a dirt road. The fire reaches the empty strip and, if the break is wide enough and the wind is not too strong, it dies down instead of climbing into the next stand of trees. Though actually, a strong wind can still throw sparks across, so a firebreak helps; it does not magic the fire away. A wide road or a river can work as one too. The “break” is a break in the fire’s path.
防火帶、防火線(山林裡清出的空地。台灣街上的「防火巷」是樓與樓之間的巷子,不是這個)
組成fire + break (a break in the fire’s path). Built like windbreak and breakwater: something that stops a force from going further.
