Something put in place to stop or slow the wind and protect what is behind it. British beaches are windy, so this is a familiar summer sight. The word is a countable noun — one windbreak, several windbreaks — and it is a calm, practical word with no special feeling attached; you meet it in farming writing, gardening advice, and holiday talk. Do not confuse it with 'windbreaker', which in American English is a light jacket that keeps the wind out (British speakers usually call that a windcheater or just a light jacket). The verb phrase 'break the wind' can mean to stop the wind, but be careful — 'break wind' on its own is a polite way of saying that someone has passed gas, so keep to the noun 'windbreak' and you will be safe.
