A breakwater is a wall people build out into the sea so that the hit that wall first and lose their force before they reach the shore or the harbour. The name is quite honest: it is there to break the water. You see them as long lines of huge rocks or concrete, often with a gap so boats can still come in. Though actually, it is not the same thing as a , which usually sits on the land itself, and it is not a dam, which holds a river back. A breakwater stands in the water. People keep the word for this sea wall; they do not often stretch it.
