Filtration is the process of cleaning a liquid — or sometimes a gas — by passing it through a filter, so unwanted bits stay behind. It names the process, not the tool and not the liquid. You meet it in science class and in talk about drinking water. Though actually, the tidy school word “cleaning” is a little neater than the lab. Chemists also say filtration when they are not making something nicer, only splitting a mixture: liquid through, solids left behind. Filtering coffee is, if you want to be exact, filtration, though almost nobody at breakfast says that. The word is a little formal and technical; the idea is ordinary: holes let the liquid through and hold the rest. English borrowed it from French filtration. Filter, , and filtration walk together: filter is the tool or the verb, filtration is the doing, is the liquid you get.

組成Borrowed from French filtration. In English it is filter + -ation (the process). Filter itself goes back, through French filtre and Latin filtrum, to felt — the thick cloth used to strain liquid.
