In cricket, a fieldsman is a player who stands out on the grass to stop or catch the ball after it is hit — the same job most people now just call a fielder. You hear fieldsman more from older speakers and in older match reports; live commentary often says fielder instead. It is British sports English, not American baseball English (baseball says fielder, never fieldsman). Though actually, it is not a farmer: the “field” is the playing ground, and the little -s- in the middle is only a joining sound, the way it is in huntsman. A kind, slightly old-fashioned word for a very ordinary job on the team.
