A fetishist is a person who gets sexual pleasure from unusual objects, materials, body parts, or activities — the someone who has a fetish, or who practises fetishism. In careful language it names that sexual pattern. In loose talk people sometimes call anyone with a very strong, odd-looking attachment a fetishist, which stretches the word. It can sound like a textbook or doctor’s word, or, depending on the voice, teasing. Keep the jobs straight: the fetishist is the person; fetishism is the pattern; a fetish is often the thing or the focus.

組成fetish + -ist (the person). Same origin as fetishism: French fétiche, from Portuguese feitiço, from Latin facticius, “made by art,” from facere, “to make.”
