Feminism is the belief that women should have the same rights and chances as men — to vote, to learn, to work, to be paid fairly, to be safe, to choose. Though actually, people who accept that sentence still argue about the rest: some fight mainly in law, some about money in the home, some about how girls are talked to at school. The word can feel hot. In some rooms it is said with pride; in others it is like a warning, and a few people use it as an insult, which tells you more about them than about the idea. English first recorded feminism in 1851 with a different meaning — “the state of being feminine.” The “women’s rights” sense we use now is from 1895. You will meet it in news, essays, and class; it is a serious, public word, not café slang.
組成From French féminisme (around 1837), ultimately from Latin fēmina, “woman”, plus -ism (a belief or movement). In French the rights meaning was probably built straight from fēmina, as if from a Neo-Latin feminismus. English borrowed the form, then shifted the sense: 1851 “being feminine,” 1895 “advocacy of women’s rights.”
