Fecund means able to produce a lot of life — many children, many young animals, or rich crops. A fecund valley grows food easily. Writers also stretch it: a fecund mind produces many ideas; a fecund year in music produces many good songs. It is a formal, word. Fertile is the everyday cousin. It is about producing plenty, not only about being pregnant at this moment. Some people say FEE-kund, others FEK-und; both are heard.
