Fecundity is how good a person, an animal, or a piece of land is at making more life — many children, many young animals, or a rich harvest of crops. If fecundity is high, a lot of young are born, or the fields give a lot of food. Scientists like the word because you can count it: how many babies, how much grain. In everyday talk, people more often say fertility when they mean a person who can have a child; fecundity sounds a bit more like a biology book, and it quietly points at plenty, not only at “yes or no.” Writers sometimes stretch it and talk about the fecundity of a mind or a culture, meaning ideas keep coming. That stretch belongs more to books than to the kitchen table.
