Picture a page sliding into a machine, travelling down a phone line as an electronic signal, and then printing out as a copy on a machine far away. 'fax' is that whole idea of sending a paper document over the phone wire — and the word stretches to name the copy that comes out, the machine that does it, the system behind it, and the act of sending.
