Fanaticism is holding a political or religious belief so tightly that you will not listen, and you may harm people or shut them out. Writers use the word to show — it is not a compliment, and it is stronger than enthusiasm or even passion. The person is a fanatic; fanaticism is the extreme way of believing. People also stretch it toward any hobby taken too far (“his fanaticism for that team”), but the serious use is about belief, not sport. Though actually, the everyday word fan began as a short form of fanatic, so the cheering meaning and the dangerous meaning grew from the same place; in careful writing, fanaticism still carries the dark one.
組成fanatic (someone with extreme beliefs; from Latin fanaticus, originally a person in a wild religious frenzy) + -ism (the practice or system).
