From Old English fæġernes 'beauty, pleasantness', from fair + -ness; the modern sense of even-handedness grew out of fair meaning 'free from blemish, then free from bias'.
從古英語 fæġernes 來，本義偏向「美、令人愉快」，是 fair 加上名詞字尾 -ness。fair 原本指「無瑕疵、乾淨」，後來這份「沒有被弄髒、沒有偏斜」的感覺轉到人的行為上，就成了「不偏袒」。
