Impartiality is the quality of being impartial: not taking a side, and therefore able to be fair. Courts, newsrooms, and sports talk about it as a duty or a rule — “the impartiality of the judge,” “a commitment to impartiality.” It is an abstract, formal noun. You cannot touch it; you can only show it by how you decide, speak, or report. In daily speech people more often say “be fair” or “don’t take sides.” When someone doubts a newspaper or a court, they often attack its impartiality: they are saying it has already chosen a team. The word praises a way of working, not a cold heart. You can care about justice and still practise impartiality; the idea is that care is not allowed to tip the scales for one person.
